Before he tragically passed away on stage while performing in Paris, Haitian singer Michael Benjamin was on stage.
The 41-year-old artist’s death was announced by the culture minister, Emmelie Prophet Milcé, who added that it was “a terrible loss for the country and for Haitian music.”
The singer’s cause of death hasn’t been determined, but early indications point to a heart arrest, according to The Haitian Times.
After finishing his performance, the musician allegedly passed out and left the stage. He was undergoing CPR, according to Pedre, who was there at the concert and reported it later.
The Haitian music scene, including his fellow CaRiMi artists and management, was in disbelief as he announced his passing.
First known as Mika and then Mikaben, Benjamin wrote his first song when he was 15 and made a name for himself when he finished fourth with his song, “Nwèl Tristès,” in a Christmas concert organized by the Telemax television channel, the St. Vincent Times reported.
Benjamin’s wife, Vanessa Fanfan, is pregnant and expecting their child in December, the Times reported.
